Getting Started in Golf

When starting to play golf, there are a number of items of equipment you will need to enable you to play. If you decide to have some lessons with a local instructor, they might be able to provide you with some clubs to use initially. However, after the first few lessons and before you take to the course yourself, it’s important to have the right equipment.

You may begin by using a full set of golf clubs or even half a set of clubs. Whatever option you take, use the expertise of the staff in the club shop or the golf store you are in. They will help assist you in making the correct decision. Specific sections of the club need to to fit you, in order for you to get the most out of them. This includes the length of the club and the thickness of the grip. Once you have made the decision to step on to the golf course, you will need a bag and possibly a trolley. These are options if you do not want to use a buggy or carry the bag around with you. Do not be tempted to go and purchase the biggest, best looking bag you can find straight away. Go for something that you can easily handle and that your clubs will slot in to nicely, without having them rattle about too much.

In addition to the bag and clubs, there are a number of important items, required to play golf. The obvious one being the ball. It’s a good idea to have a number of spare balls in your bag, as you don’t know when you might lose the one you are using. Especially if there are water hazards or deep rough on the course. Also, do not forget to mark your ball using a ball stamper or golf ball marker pen. Many other golfers could be using the same ball as you and you don’t want to drop a shot simply because you failed to mark it.

You will also need a pencil, to mark your scorecard, a marker, to enable you to pick your ball up when it is in play and a divot repair tool. This is so you can replace any divots you make or find, as you go around the course. Finally, do not forget to put a towel in your bag or even, connect it to the outside of your bag. This will allow you to easily clean your clubs and ball as you play your way around the course. Many players seem to forget this vital piece of equipment, which will help to keep your clubs in pristine condition and ensure that you always make a clean contact with the ball.

The standard dress code for a golf course, is a collared shirt, coupled with smart trousers and golf shoes. A polo shirt is perfect for golf, not too loose but loose enough to allow an easy golf swing. The same applies to trousers, keep them smart looking but not tight fitting, as this will restrict movement when playing shots. It’s also advisable to take a comfortable cap to wear on your head, as playing in sunny conditions can cause sun burn and headaches. Golf shoes come with spikes on the sole, which provide a solid footing, especially in wet conditions. The majority of golf shoes are also water-proof but it’s worth double checking this before purchase, as they will make you feel much more comfortable when playing in wet conditions.

As mentioned previously, when getting started in golf, it’s wise to book some lessons with a qualified instructor at a local course. This will ensure you get off to a good start in terms of your grip, stance and swing. If you are unable to do this for any reason, there are also a number of online courses or even apps, which will guide you through the fundamentals of playing the game. The golf swing can be broken down in to a number of key elements, including set-up, takeaway, back-swing, top of the swing, down-swing, impact, follow-through and finish.

Each of the above golf swing elements, have technical aspects relating to them, that require practice to perfect. For example, during the set-up, it’s important to remain balanced, to feel the weight in the middle of your feet, have a slight flex in the knees and keep your head steady, as your arms and shoulders turn. This may seem like a lot of information and that’s only for the set-up aspect of the swing but with practice, they can be mastered. As you progress through each element of the golf swing, they will begin to blend together, to produce one, fluid movement.
