The 2018 US Open will take place between the 27th August and 9th September at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Flushing Meadows, New York.
Tennis fans are looking forward to the final Grand Slam of the year with a great deal of excitement as the top players from around the world gather for the biggest prize money in the history of the sport.
The winner of the men’s and women’s singles at the 2018 US Open will each go home with $3.8 million, an increase of $100,000 on last year. The runners-up in the singles will receive $1.85 million, not bad for second place and the winners of the men’s and women’s doubles will share $700,000.
The US Open has always led the way in terms of prize money and became the first to offer equal prize money for the winner of the men’s and women’s singles. Going back to 2013, the US Open has seen a phenomenal increase in prize money by 57%, and it seems set to continue in the foreseeable future.
Another step taken by the United States Tennis Association ahead of this year’s tournament concerns the seedings.
There was much debate following the 2018 French Open when Serena Williams was not seeded for the tournament. The American star had dropped down the world rankings following her pregnancy, but the French Open did not take that into consideration. Williams was left unseeded despite finishing runner-up in 2016 and winning in 2015.
Williams knocked out two seeded players before being forced to withdraw through injury, and the USTA announced they will be taking pregnancy into consideration when deciding the seeded players for the 2018 US Open.
As a result, Williams has been seeded 26 and will start the tournament as one of the favourites to win the title for the seventh time.
The 2018 US Open men’s singles are arguably going to be the best Grand Slam singles tournament of the year. All four of the big names in men’s tennis are in the draw, with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray each declaring themselves fit to play This will be the first time that has happened this season.
In addition, this will be the first US Open since 2015 that all four stars of the men’s game will participate and that’s great news for the fans.
Murray has used a protected ranking to gain entry to the tournament and will not be seeded. However, the 2012 champion will be a very dangerous man in the draw, and every other player will want to avoid the Scot.
It will be great to see Serena Williams back in action on home soil plus the four greats of the men’s game all aiming to show they still have what it takes to win at the highest level. The 2018 US Open is going to be something special.
